More Than a Workout: A Circle of Friends

Sep 08, 2025

This is Wendy, one of our participants who has been doing the Strength for Life program for 20 years and still continues.  Below is her story of how the Strength for Life program has helped her.

How did you find out about the Strength for Life Program?

I used to live in Riverton and went there for Riverton Masters Swimming.  It was called Living Longer Living Stronger back then.  I moved and joined the one close to the village I live in.

Did you find the referral process easy?

It was easy.  I had no issues getting the referral.  It makes sense – the instructors doing plans need to know if there is anything important.  Especially with any health issues.

How long have you been doing Strength for Life?

I’ve been doing the program for 20 years now.  Since it started.

How has the program benefited you?

It keeps me young!!  I’ll be 90 very soon!  I have been young for a long time!  Going to the gym makes you very aware of your posture.  Balance is very important too and something I really have to work on.

How do you find the exercise?

Usually I can do the exercise with no problems!  The instructors are really good and give alternatives if you can’t do them.  They are very understanding.  We are encouraged to advise the instructor if there are any issues with the exercise before hand and they will adjust it for you.

What is your favorite part about Strength for Life?

The individual plan is good but it’s the classes!  I treat it as an appointment, and I have it in my calendar.  Somedays I feel like I could just stay at home, but because it’s a set class and I put it in as an appointment I go and feel much better after.  It’s such a nice group of friends too!

Have you managed to make new friends?

I’ve made friends with people I may have never met if I didn’t come.  I’ve got no family here but I’ve got all these interest and friends.  Nearly all my friends I have made is through exercise – they gym, pole walking and swimming.

What would you say to someone who wants to join but isn’t sure?

“It’s the best thing you could ever do!  It helps you to maintain independence, get fit and make friends!  Once you get into the rhythm of getting into the gym it’s structure.  The benefits are just wonderful!”
